Photography, Print, Present

January 23 - March 5, 2016
Saturdays 9:00am-12:00pm

Classes typically run for seven weeks, starting in January, May, and September.

The joy of photography is in sharing our vision with others. This series of courses develops the students' photographic vision and takes the students through printing to sharing the prints in a small exhibition and photo critique. Students may take just the Photo classes, or just the Print classes, or both. The Photo and Print classes interweave, allowing the learning from the other.

For those who take both Photo and Print classes, there is a small exhibition and a final overall photo critique.

Description: Photography Class (Urban Vision)

taught by: Michael Vuckovic

Why do you take pictures and what is your photographic vision? This course is about discovering and developing your photographic vision in an urban environment.

Each class will start with a brief discussion on the work of influential photographers, including:

  • Henri Cartier-Bresson and William Eggleston: "The Decisive Moment"
  • Garry Winogrand: social documentary
  • Paul Strand, Aaron Siskind and others: the urban landscape

Next, students will tackle One One Six — a personal exercise to help you develop your personal vision. Each participant will venture out into the local area for up to one hour, limited by up to one kilometer, and we will repeat the exercise six times! The limitations and the repetition will help you:

  • See beyond the typical cliche photograph.
  • Re-investigate photographic settings that you might have previously ignored.
  • Develop and strengthen your personal photographic vision.
  • Stimulate creative energy if you are feeling in a bit of a photographic rut.

Finally, part three of each class is a group discussion of your work. Each week you will present for discussion one printed image you created from the week before.

Through studying the work of others, repetitive practicing, personal reflection and open discussion, your photographic vision will emerge, which you can build upon to develop a stronger body of work.

RECOMMENDATION: Creating an image is only part of the craft we call photography. To quote one of my heros, Ansel Adams, "The negative is comparable to the composer’s score and the print to its performance. Each performance differs in subtle ways". To fully develop the potential of your images, I recommend you also register for the Print course with Jim Lamont.

EQUIPMENT: This workshop is open to anyone with any type of camera: digital, film, point-and-shoot, smartphone, SLR, 4x5, or whatever you can use to make an 8x10 print (or larger). However, having a camera you can use to adjust shutter speed and aperture will give you more creative options.
